Fecal Impaction

We are very busy people.  Seems that everyone has some agenda today that prevents them from being sensible when it comes to health.  Poor dietary habits, lack of exercise and stress are a way of life.  A person might get away with this for several years until some bitter day when the body rebels and we're left with a frail, sagging husk of what was a perfect machine.  It doesn't have to be that way.  You can live a rich, healthy, full life and be viable past your 90's with just a little forethought.

So who wants to think about what goes on inside when we have enough worries outside of the body?  A smart person.  Words like enema, colonic, bowel, colon, intestines, anus, rectum, and internal organs should become less than strangers unless you want to learn about words like diverticulitis, impaction, hemorrhoid, irritable bowel syndrome and way too many others to even list.

What is a fecal impaction?

Fecal impaction is a serious complication of constipation.  A solid, immobile bulk of human feces lodged in the rectum or sigmoid colon, which can no longer be eliminated with normal bowel movements. Surgery may be required if aggressive measures are not taken to try and eliminate the stool but many people find that they can relieve a fecal impaction with an enema. It can be caused by a number of things:

Anticholinergics: which affect the interaction between nerves and muscles of the bowel
Diarrhea medicine: if taken too often
Narcotic pain medication: such as methadone and codeine
medications:  including antacids that have aluminum as an ingredient
calcium and iron supplements
over-use of laxatives

a category of anti-hypertensive drugs known as calcium channel blockers
allergy medicines (antihistamines)
psychotropic medications as antidepressants and tranquilizers
hormones such as estrogen and progestin
medications to reduce spasms such as those used in treating Parkinson's disease
poor bowel habits
not having a regular schedule for evacuating the bowel
inadequate fluid intake
a diet that is lacking in such fibers as bran, fruit, and vegetables
such rectal disorders as rectocele

Fecal impaction is often seen in people who have had constipation for a long time and have been using laxatives. Impaction is even more likely when the laxatives are stopped suddenly. The muscles of the intestines forget how to move stool or feces on their own.

Symptoms of fecal impaction:
Do you know that people are often so busy that they don't know when they last had a bowel movement?  They are that detached from their body.  Lack of a bowel movement is just one symptom of a fecal impaction.  Others include:

Abdominal cramping and bloating
Leakage of liquid or sudden episodes of watery diarrhea in someone who has chronic constipation
Rectal bleeding
Small, semi-formed stools
Straining when trying to pass stools
Bladder pressure or loss of bladder control
Lower back pain
Rapid heartbeat or light-headedness from straining to pass stool

Treatment:
Of course we're going to suggest an enema but here are other ways of dealing with this potentially serious problem and they include taking in plenty of fluids, getting good consistent exercise, and a healthy diet rich in fiber. These are preventative measures and are vital to a long healthy life.  In serious cases of impaction a trip to the hospital may be the only cure.  A doctor or nurse will manually insert a finger and break-up the fecal matter so it can be passed.

Fecal impaction cannot be treated effectively with oral laxatives, which are ineffective for this condition and worsen abdominal discomfort and pain. Treatments should be either enemas or suppositories or manual fragmentation.

Inject a small of oil as a (retention enema).
By injecting 8 to16oz. of oil (olive oil, vegetable oil, mineral oil ) into the rectum and holding this solution for 30 to 60 minutes or longer, it should give enough time to soften the feces enough to produce a bowel movement.  In this instance using oil is a better choice than soap suds because it will also provide necessary lubrication to the rectum and anus.

The easiest way to inject oil into the rectum is with a bulb syringe

Next, take a old-fashioned 2 qt. soap suds enema and hold it for 5 to 10 minutes this will allow time for the water and soap to soften the remaining feces so it can be expelled. This enema will clean further into the colon.
This second soap suds enema should produce the results that you require.
You might want to repeat the soap suds enema again to insure the best results.

After finishing with the soaps suds enemas you need to rinse any remaining soap residue out of your colon with a warm water enema series.

Their are several enemas recipes (list of enema recipes)  that can also be used to help accomplish this purpose.

Mineral oil enemas are indeed effective for preliminary softening of the fecal impaction. Should the enemas fail to relieve the impaction, manual fragmentation and extraction {breaking apart, the impaction with a finger or probe} is the next step that may be used. Following this procedure, mineral oil enemas are helpful in lubricating the rectum and facilitate expulsion of any residual feces.

Note:  Remember too that children fall prey to constipation often and what I'm advocating here is preventative. A diet rich in fiber, prying them away from that TV for some exercise, plenty of liquids and ample rest.  We all benefit from having structure in our lives as much as we may resent that.  Our bodies do prefer a regimen.  A time to eat, to rest, to play and yep even to evacuate what we've accumulated.  Please start to treat your body like the miracle it truly is before you know the meaning of heart disease, kidney failure or worse.
